Led by the World Food Programme (WFP), the ETS was activated in North-East Nigeria in November 2016 in response to the protection crisis. ETS Nigeria Situation Reports are issued monthly.
Highlights
• On 02 June, ETS met with OCHA to share progress on deploying ICT services in Pulka and Damboa. ETS re-affirmed its commitment to complete the Damboa deployment by the end of July, pending a secure environment to ensure safe and effective implementation.
• On 26 June, a major outage affected all primary Internet Service Providers (ISPs) across Borno State, disrupting data and voice services for over an hour. While ETS users in deep-field locations remained unaffected, connectivity at the Maiduguri Red Roof humanitarian hub was impacted. ETS promptly activated a backup ISP to restore critical connectivity for responders in Maiduguri, ensuring minimal disruption until full service was reestablished.
• From 03 to 05 June, ETS hosted advanced radio training in Maiduguri for 10 humanitarian professionals. The intensive sessions boosted operational communication skills and reinforced best practices, empowering field teams to coordinate more safely and effectively.
Activities
Coordination
The ETS continues to address funding constraints by proactively adjusting its operations across short-, medium- and long-term horizons. With support from the Global ETC, a strategic assessment was conducted from 19 May to 06 June to explore cost-saving measures, resource optimization, and strategic partnerships while maintaining service quality.
Coordination efforts are also underway with partners to prepare for potential equipment relocations due to possible office closures linked to funding challenges. On
02 June, the ETS met with OCHA to provide updates on the deployment of ICT services in Pulka and Damboa. During the meeting, ETS committed to completing the Damboa deployment by the end of July, contingent on security conditions that allow safe implementation.
