Demography & Sampling
The Sentinel Surveillance System is a community-based surveillance mechanism implemented in Borno and Yobe states. Designed as an early warning system, it serves to monitor and inform program performance and response efforts.
In Borno State, the community sentinel surveillance follows a meticulously designed sample-census approach. This methodology involves selecting 10 communities or settlements per ward, with data collected from 5 of these communities during each cycle. This process is carried out across all 23 accessible Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Borno State. Similarly, in Yobe State, data is collected across 17 accessible LGAs, covering 163 wards. In both states, data is gathered from 5 settlements within each accessible ward, ensuring a comprehensive representation of communities across the two states.
The demographics of the sampled populations are visually depicted in a diagram, offering a clear and detailed representation of the distribution across the surveyed communities and settlements in Borno and Yobe. This structured and systematic approach to sentinel surveillance enables robust data collection and provides valuable insights into nutrition and health trends, supporting informed decision-making and program improvements in both states.
