Background
2025 will be a year where funding will be declining severely, following the decisions of major donor countries to reduce their support to humanitarian and development partners. A preliminary survey conducted among partners of the Protection Sector Northeastern Nigeria (PSNE) in February 2025 highlighted that already 17 partners reported to have suspended protection programmes in 45 LGAs. An estimated 34 percent of the protection budget of US funded partners is currently frozen, with high risk of a cancellation for the rest of the year. This amounts to 13.5 percent of the total funding requirement of the Protection Sector Northeastern Nigeria in 2025. These percentages only concern US funding. The decreased support of other donors will impact further the funding resources for protection in Northeastern Nigeria.
