SITUATION OVERVIEW

• Niger faces a combination of structural vulnerabilities and acute shocks linked to insecurity and climatic changes that drive food insecurity. According to the December 2025 Cadre Harmonisé results, published by the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS), 2.4 million people are projected to face severe food insecurity during the June – August 2026 period. The 2025 IPC Nutrition analysis also revealed that 1.6 million children are suffering from acute malnutrition (MAM) including 0.4 million with severe acute malnutrition (SAM). • Internal displacement shocks persist as threats and violence from terrorist groups continue particularly in Tillaberi, Tahoua, Dosso and Diffa regions. In January 2026 alone, over 110,000 people were recorded as newly displaced through the Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM), with 81,000 people located in the Tillaberi region alone. Following needs assessments of newly displaced populations, RRM partners coordinate responses. WFP is preparing voucher assistance to support 58,000 people for three months and an additional 14,000 people for two months. • WFP’s resourcing situation is critical in Niger. With current resources, WFP can only assist 350,000 people with emergency assistance through to April 2026. WFP will face a total suspension in its humanitarian responses beyond this without new contributions.
