OIC Secretary-General urgent appeal to member states to assist Niger in battle against disastrous famine

The Republic of Niger is presently battling with a trying humanitarian disaster brought on by the onslaught of a wave of drought and famine that has claimed many lives among children, the disabled, and the elderly.

Bringing into play the role of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in coordinating Joint Islamic Action (JIA) and strengthening the solidarity of its Member States, OIC Secretary-General, Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu addressed an impassioned plea to all OIC Member States, charitable institutions, and relief organizations to work quickly to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Niger in support of this brotherly country at its hour of need. The Secretary General emphasized the urgent need to work to save the lives of people succumbing under the plight of hunger and pain, and put into effect the principles of Islamic solidarity, which is at the heart of the teaching of Islam and which is considered the strong bond of the sons of the Islamic Ummah.

The OIC Secretary-General urged the Member States and their philanthropic institutions and bodies to expedite the dispatch of material assistance to Niger through the special account opened at the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) No. 5551000190306 in line with the resolution adopted by the 32nd Session of the Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers (ICFM) recently held in Sana'a, Republic of Yemen, which provides for the coordination of this issue through the General Secretariat of the Organization of the Islamic Conference.
