More than 3.5 million people are in urgent need of food assistance after localised droughts and the locust outbreaks in 2004 caused huge crop failures.
The response of the international community to appeals for assistance has been insufficient and the situation continues to deteriorate.
ACT will channel appeal funds through two organisations - Swiss Interchurch Aid (HEKS) and Lutheran World Relief (LWR).
These organisations work with local organisations working in drought-prone areas in the Tahoua/Maradi Department in southern Niger.
Christian Aid also has an emergency officer in Mali looking at the situation in the Sahel region and is investigating what further help Christian Aid might provide.
