Heavy rain has been affecting several Districts of the Canterbury Region (central-eastern South Island, southern New Zealand) over the past few days causing floods and rivers overflow, and resulting in evacuations and damage. According to media reports, hundreds of people living in at least 250 houses have been evacuated, several roads have been flooded, schools, offices and highways have been closed. A state of emergency was declared for the entire Region. For the next 24 hours, heavy rain is forecast over the affected Region where a red warning for heavy rain is in effect.
