New Caledonia (France) - Wildfire (Sécurité Civile NC, Copernicus EMSR, JRC GWIS) (ECHO Daily Flash of 09 January 2025)

  • Since 8 January, a wildfire has been burning in Le Mont-Dore commune, across Blue River and Prony areas, in the South Province of southern New Caledonia (France), causing damage.
  • According to national authorities, as of 9 January, the wildfire has burnt an area of 1,650 ha, and at least 30 firefighters, 12 helicopters, and 12 engine have been deployed.
  • The Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMSR784) was activated in rapid mapping mode on 8 January to provide wildfire extent emergency mapping.
  • Over the next 48 hours, according to the JRC Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS), the fire danger forecast is high in the affected area.
