New Caledonia - Earthquakes (COGIC, GDACS, USGS, PTWC, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 31 March 2022)

  • Two earthquakes of magnitude 6.9 M and 7.0 M, at a depth of 10 km, occurred south-east off the coast of Maré Island (Loyalty Islands Province) respectively on 30 March at 20.56 UTC (31 March at 7.56 local time) and on 31 March at 5.44 UTC (16.44 local time). The epicentres were offshore approximately 270 km south-east of La Roche Town (Maré Island).
  • At least nine other aftershocks with magnitude up to 5.9 M have been registered in the area.
  • Small tsunami waves, generated by the 6.9 M event have been recorded in New Caledonia Island, Maré Island and Lifou Island. However, there is no tsunami alert issued for New Caledonia.
  • According to media, so far there are no reports of any casualties or damage received.
