Background
Torrential rain beginning September 26, 2024, caused severe flooding and landslides, and inundated settlements across 23 Districts of Nepal as rivers overflowed, with huge impact encountered from the evening of 27 September onwards. Rescue and search teams were mobilised to rescue those stranded in their homes, as rising waters engulfed the communities.
Considering the widespread impact, the government announced the closure of schools and educational institutions in flood-affected areas until October 1, 2024, and halted the continuation of exams. UNICEF Nepal reported that more than 10,000 boys and girls have been impacted due to the damages inflicted in 54 schools, and water supplies have been widely damaged. Floods and landslides have caused significant damage to houses, roads, bridges, hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure, particularly in central and eastern Nepal. Immediate needs include access to shelter, food, safe drinking water and hygiene materials alongside messaging on child protection and prevention of Cholera and Dengue outbreaks.
