Floods emergency response
Between 27 and 28 September, heavy and continuous rainfall across Nepal caused widespread flooding and landslides, resulting in extensive devastation affecting 21 districts, with seven severely affected. Over 88,000 hectares of farmland have been damaged, and more than 147,000 households affected.
On 29 September, the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) activated its anticipatory action framework for eastern Nepal, focusing on vulnerable populations in Sunsari and Saptari districts of Koshi and Madhesh provinces. The CERF anticipatory approach in Nepal is being implemented by FAO, UNFPA, UNICEF, and WFP. In collaboration with cooperating partners, early warning messages were disseminated to the affected communities ahead of the flood. Through this initiative, WFP will also provide multi-purpose cash assistance of NPR 15,000 (approximately USD 112) to affected households to help meet immediate needs.
As co-lead of the National Logistics Cluster, WFP has worked with the government to facilitate the movement of relief items from the Kathmandu HSA to flood and landslide-affected areas, ensuring timely delivery of essential supplies. WFP also provides coordination and information management support to inform cluster members and ensure access to logistics services.
