Highlights

  • The United Nations in Nepal hosted a Joint Executive Board mission, with representatives from WFP, UNDP, UNICEF, UN Women, UNOPS and UNFPA. The board members visited several project sites in four different areas of Nepal: Nuwakot, Sindhuli, Bajhang and the Terai.

  • Representatives from KFC Japan, Japan Association for WFP, visited schools in Bardiya and Sindupalchowk to observe the WFP School Meals Programme pilot project.

Operational Updates

  • In April, WFP supported the Ministry of Agricultural Development to hold 74 district food security network meetings across the country as part of the Nepal Food Security Monitoring System (NeKSAP). Based on the output of these meetings, a new integrated food security phase classification (IPC-acute) map will be produced and disseminated in May.

  • Students from WFP’s pilot schools in Sindupalchowk participated in WFP’s Global Design Competition. The top five drawings have been submitted to WFP Headquarters in Rome and the winner will be announced in May.

  • WFP continues its focus on creating access in rural Nepal to support food security and resilience. Under the Quick Win Trail Project, assessments by engineers have been completed for 40 km of trails with 100 km being improved in Gorkha and Dhading.

  • Through WFP’s digital beneficiary and transfer management system, SCOPE, WFP has opened 1,400 bank accounts for women and men participating in CFA activities.

  • WFP is supporting the creation of community assets in three earthquake-affected districts to assist the most food-insecure households to restore food and nutrition security and build resilient livelihoods. CFA activities for a total of 40 days are yet to be completed, and food/cash distributions have been halted due to the elections code of conduct, affecting Gorkha, Dhading and Nuwakot.

  • Under the Zero Hunger Communities Project, 17 trainings for livelihood improvement have been completed.
Contracts have been awarded for the construction of infrastructure (kitchen, WASH, repairing of toilets) for 38 schools in the Far Western region for the school infrastructure and development programme.

  • WFP is supporting the Government of Nepal to conduct a Strategic Review of Sustainable Development Goal 2 (end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture). A research institute will be contracted by WFP on behalf of the Strategic Review Advisory Group to carry out the technical and consultative work associated with the Strategic Review process. The Terms of Reference have been finalised by the Advisory Group, and WFP is currently proceeding with the selection of proposals.
