September flooding and landslides claim lives in Nepal as recovery work intensifies
The extremely heavy rains that started on the night of 26 th September 2024 and lasted through Saturday, 28 th September evening have left a trail of destruction across the country. As of 3rd October, the total number of deaths has reached 236, with 19 individuals still missing and 165 reported injured (Source: SitRep 3_Flood and Landslides_September Nepal SitRep 2).
The devastating weather has wreaked havoc across several provinces, with Kathmandu Valley bearing the brunt of the destruction. In addition to the loss of life, the infrastructure damage is extensive. In Dhadhing's Jhyaple Khola area alone, 35 bodies were recovered after landslides buried four passenger buses. Rescue operations, including helicopter evacuations, are ongoing as authorities strive to locate the missing and provide aid to those affected by the disaster. The weather improved on Sunday, 29th September following three days of monsoon rains, and rescue and clean-up efforts were underway. Kathmandu remained cut off Sunday as three highways out of the city were blocked by landslides. However, major roadblocks and continued rainfall pose challenges for the teams on the ground. The local governments, several non-governmental organizations and individual’s groups are providing the immediate relief materials to the flood and landslides affected people. Government announces aid package for families of deceased after floods through Cabinet Meeting
On 30th September 2024, Cabinet meeting held under the lead of Rt Hon. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli decided to honor the victims. The government has declared a three-day mourning after floods and landslides killed. PM Oli instructed ministers to submit a detailed report on the loss of lives and properties and cost estimates for rebuilding.
The meeting has decided to hand over Rs 200,000 to the families of those who died in the floods and landslides. If someone has gone missing and his/her body is not found within ten days, the person will be considered as dead and the family will receive the same compensation as other victims.
The government has also announced free treatment for all those injured in the disaster. As many as 92 people are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals, according to the home ministry. Similarly, all ministers will contribute one month’s salary to the Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund.
