Monsoon induced flood and landslides wreak havoc in eastern Nepal

The fragile hilly pockets of eastern Nepal have been severely affected due to the monsoon-induced flood and landslide causing disruptions to the social and regular activities of local settlements. Flooding caused by incessant rainfall of 17 June 2023 (2 Ashad 2080) at 10:30 PM has resulted in the disappearance of 28 individuals in the region while 14 people lost their lives and 7 are physically injured.

77 houses are fully damaged and 26 houses partially damaged with approximately 1534 people being displaced across Panchthar, Taplejung and Sankhuwasabha districts. Ward offices with support from the local communities along with security units were involved in immediate disaster rescue works and injured people have been taken to nearby government hospitals for treatment.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister of Koshi Province, at Biratnagar, a meeting involving concerned provincial ministries and other members on 18 June 2023 (3 Ashad 2080) have decided to conduct immediate disaster rescue and relief works and also planned to contact and coordinate with all concerned government line agencies including District Administration Office, Security Units and also to inform federal Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) for further support.

As per the guidance from the Chief Minister of Koshi Province, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law (MoIAL) Koshi Province is in regular communication and coordination with the affected districts to take updates of the loss and damage as well as to provide non-food relief items to the needy families. The full extent of the loss and damage situation is still being assessed by concerned government agencies. Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) along with other partner organizations are extending several kinds of non-food relief support to the disaster affected people and their families.
