UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO.1

SITUATION

A) FOLLOWING TORRENTIAL RAINS FOR PAST TWO WEEKS EXTENSIVE FLOOD AND LANDSLIDE DAMAGE HAVE BEEN REPORTED THROUGHOUT COUNTRY. PARTICULARLY AFFECTED ARE CENTRAL AND EASTERN TERAI DISTRICTS AND CENTRAL HILLS. IN ADDITION TO DAMAGE TO CROPS, HOUSES, PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE (MAINLY TRANSPORTATION) AND PRIVATE PROPERTY, MANY FAMILIES RENDERED HOMELESS. DUE TO FLOODING AND LANDSLIDES ALONG ROADS, TRAFFIC ON MAJOR HIGHWAYS IS AFFECTED. AIR SERVICES ALSO DISRUPTED DUE TO FLOODING OF AIRFIELDS IN TERAI. GOVERNMENT CURRENTLY PROVIDING IMMEDIATE RELIEF TO DISASTER VICTIMS AND IS ASSESSING MAGNITUDE OF DISASTER AND RELIEF REQUIREMENTS. AVAILABLE INFORMATION INDICATES THAT DAMAGE IS EXTENSIVE.

B) FINANCE MINISTER ON 13 AUGUST CONVENED AN EMERGENCY BRIEFING MEETING OF LOCAL DONOR REPRESENTATIVES TO APPRISE THEM OF EXISTING FLOOD SITUATION. HE INDICATED THAT IN VIEW EXTENT OF DAMAGE, EXTERNAL RELIEF ASSISTANCE MAY BE NECESSARY FOR WHICH A FORMAL REQUEST IS TO BE MADE WHEN MORE INFORMATION ON NEEDS AVAILABLE.
