Nepal: Far-west flood and landslide toll hits 64

The death toll in the recent floods and landslides in the far-western districts has reached 64.

Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam told the Constituent Assembly on Saturday that deaths were reported in Bajura, Kailali, Kanchanpur, Doti, Bajhang and Darchula districts that have been hit by floods and landslides. According to him, four people are still missing in the floods.

He informed that the Central Disaster Relief Committee has approved Rs 77.3 million as immediate relief aid for the affected families.

He also said the government would come up with a bigger relief package for the flood and landslide victims once Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal returns from New York.

On Friday, after returning to the capital from an inspection visit to flood-hit districts in far-western region, Gautam said the government is preparing to declare emergency in affected areas in order to expedite relief efforts.

The government has not been able to maintain reliable statistics of the damage caused by floods in the region hence no estimate of the resources required for rehabilitation of the affected population.
