Nepal to extend UN mission's term

KATHMANDU, Nov 20, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The Nepali government Tuesday decided to extend the term of the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) by six months, reported local media house's website eKantipur.

The decision was made at a cabinet meeting held Tuesday afternoon at the cabinet office at the chief secretariate Singha Durbar, on the verbal proposal tabled by Foreign Minister Sahana Pradhan during the cabinet meeting last week.

"The government will now consult the seven parties before formally notifying the UN headquarters to extend the UNMIN's term, " Health Minister Giriraj Mani Pokharel said after the cabinet meeting.

The government has to formally notify the UN headquarters at least one month before the UNMIN's term expires if the term is to be extended. The year-long term of the UNMIN had started on Jan. 23 earlier this year.
