The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal today is the most devastating in more than a century. Its epicenter was located 70 km from the capital city of Kathmandu, which has a population of more than 2.5 million people.
The death toll currently stands at 1,500, but is expected to rise. Reports indicate that health and medical facilities are overwhelmed. Several buildings and historical sites have collapsed. Most areas are without power or water. Communications are difficult, at best.
Aftershocks have continued throughout the day and into the evening.
The Médecins du Monde / Doctors of the World emergency response team is en route, including a surgeon, 2 doctors, and 2 logistics staff. MdM teams already working in Nepal (maternal and child health) are mobilized to assist the Nepalis.
