Altogether 1,855 people died in the western development region of Nepal during the decade-long armed conflict, according to a report.
The report released by Informal Sector Service Center (INSEC), a NGO working in the human rights sector, in Pokhara amidst a press meet Tuesday says these deaths occurred in the period between the start of Maoist insurgency in 1996 to the signing of the peace accord in 2006. It, however, states that Manang and Mustang districts in the region saw no conflict-related deaths as the two mountainous districts were least affected by the insurgency.
The report states that 1670 men and 185 women were killed in 14 districts of western development region during the conflict. According to the report, state security forces accounted for deaths of 809 deaths (655 men and 154 women) and the Maoists accounted for 954 deaths (926 men and 26 women). Furthermore, unidentified groups accounted for the deaths of 33 men and a further 56 men and 3 women died after being caught in various cross-fires.
Similarly, the condition and whereabouts of the 118 persons from the development region who went missing during the conflict period is yet to be clarified, the report said. It said that security forces forcibly disappeared 111 persons while the Maoists 7.
The report also said that 824 persons of 250 families in 11 districts in the region were displaced.
Gorkha district saw the most number of disappearances during the conflict period while people in Kapilvastu suffered displacement more than any, the report added.
