Flashfloods kill 4, life crippled across Nepal

KATHMANDU, Jul 25, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- At least four persons died as a result of floods and landslides triggered by incessant rainfall in the last few days in Nepal, The Kathmandu Post reported on Thursday.

The flashfloods also inundated various settlements and huge swathes of arable land in various districts, according to the daily.

At least three persons were swept away and died in flashfloods in Dang district, some 280 km west of Kathmandu, Wednesday afternoon, while normal life in the district remains crippled following heavy rainfalls over the last few days.

In another incident, one person died Wednesday after being buried under a landslide in Banke district, some 400 west of Kathmandu.

Dozens of local families have been displaced due to the floods in the district.

In a separate incident in Sindhuli district in central Nepal, a girl went missing Wednesday morning, reportedly swept away when she went to bathe in the Sunkoshi River, some 80 km east of Kathmandu.

In Mahottari district, some 130 km south of Kathmandu, hundreds of locals have been rendered homeless as rainfall continued.

The two-story building of 125-year-old Jaleswor hospital in collapsed due to the heavy downpour in the district, leaving scores of patients stranded in the hospital.

Normal life in the district has remained paralyzed for the last four days due to incessant rainfall since last week.

Similarly, over 300 houses of Birgunj Sub-metropolis in central Nepal have been inundated while scores in other villages in Parsa district have also come under water due to flashfloods. As many as 57 families of various villages have been displaced, police said.

Similarly, life in Sunsari, Saptari, Chitwan, and Surkhet districts has also been affected due to rainfall and flashfloods.

In Udayapur district of Eastern Development Region, some 170 km east of capital Kathmandu, the normal life has been paralyzed due to rainfall for the past few days. The rural roads have also been obstructed. No vehicles are plying in many sections of roads owing to the road obstructions by landslides.

In Nawalparasi district of western Nepal, some 160 km southwest of Kathmandu, 12 villages of the district are reeling from shortage of foodstuffs after landslides obstructed road to the residential points 10 days ago.

Around 100,000 people have been affected after traffic came to a halt in the hilly region of Nawalparasi district.

In Sankhuwasabha of Nawalparasi district, altogether 377 households have been affected because of landslides.
