KATHMANDU - WFP has investigated deliveries of rice made to earthquake-affected communities this week in Laprak VDC in Gorkha District, Nepal, and found that some of the food was damaged by monsoon rains during transport.
As soon as the problem was identified, WFP's distribution partner, the Nepal Red Cross Society, inspected the bags, separated the affected bags from the rest and continued with distributions. WFP is now in the process of replacing 120 bags of damaged rice and following up with the transporter.
WFP is continuing to transport food to over 1 million people in remote areas that are difficult to reach. If WFP discovers that food has been damaged in transport, we immediately work to replace the food.
WFP takes food quality and safety extremely seriously. We follow up on any reports we receive as a matter of priority and investigate each case. WFP's stringent food quality standards are in line with the Government of Nepal's regulations.
WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. Each year, WFP assists some 80 million people in around 75 countries.
