KATHMANDU, Jul 8, 2005 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The European Commission will provide 2.82 million euro (3.7 million US dollars) for Conflict Mitigation Program in mid-western Nepal, according to a press release issued Thursday by the Office of the Delegation of the European Commission to Nepal.
"The general objective of the program is to address the needs and constraints of the vulnerable population and the poorest groups particularly of the mid-western region of the country, and to reduce the current conflict potential by improving socio- economic conditions," the press release said.
The money will also be utilized to increase the general awareness of these population of the root causes of the conflict and the means to address them appropriately, the press release stated.
The plan also supports in confidence building measures for local communities to address the basic needs of them, to provide them tangible and direct benefits in order to strengthen capacities for peace and promote local community empowerment, the press release noted.
The plan will also cover wide range of basic social and economic services leading to the establishment of sustainable livelihood opportunities for the selected beneficiaries, the press release added.
