The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, announced today that the Government of Canada will provide an additional $5 million in humanitarian assistance funding in response to the appeal launched by the United Nations. This funding will help United Nations humanitarian agencies address the critical needs of those affected by the earthquake in Nepal.
“Canada is committed to playing a significant role in responding to the impact of this disaster,” said Minister Paradis. “The earthquake has left tens of thousands in Nepal highly vulnerable. Through experienced humanitarian partners, Canada’s support will contribute to ensuring that life-saving humanitarian assistance, including food, water and shelter, are provided to the most vulnerable people. It will also provide logistical support so assistance can reach people in isolated locations.”
Canada has provided a timely and comprehensive response to humanitarian needs resulting from the Nepal earthquake. Today’s announcement is in addition to the $5 million in humanitarian assistance funding announced on April 25 and to the launching of the Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund on April 27 that will allow the Government of Canada to match, dollar for dollar, the generosity of Canadians. With this commitment, the Government of Canada is encouraging Canadians to do their part to help those most in need in Nepal.
The Government of Canada will continue to monitor the situation and will provide further assistance, if required, to help meet life-saving needs.
