Highlights
More than two months after the earthquake, some temporary sites— especially those on privately owned land—are beginning to close or relocate. However, shelter reconstruction and livelihood recovery remain long-term challenges. UNHCR continues field monitoring to assess living conditions and works with partners through the cluster coordination mechanism to identify and implement solutions.
Australian relief items have reached the South-East, with distribution preparations underway. This follows the arrival of another set of Australian supplies for 1,000 people in Mandalay last week.
To date, over 116,000 individuals have received assistance from UNHCR and partners. More than 117,000 people have been reached through protection monitoring and assessments, which continue to guide targeted support for the most vulnerable, including those with specific needs.
UNHCR Response
▪ Relief items donated by Australia—including kitchen sets, plastic tarpaulins, jerry cans, and solar lamps for 522 families —have arrived in the South-East. UNHCR is currently preparing for their distribution.
▪ In Mandalay and Sagaing, UNHCR reached 79,663 people (17,445 families) to date, including 17,208 people (4,418 families) who received multi-purpose assistance. UNHCR conducted visits to several temporary sites set up for communities affected by the earthquake, offering immediate assistance and referring urgent needs to relevant partners through the cluster system.
▪ In Nay Pyi Taw, UNHCR has assisted 8,761 people (1,892 families) to date. UNHCR visited two local civil society organizations and identified a network of over 40 community volunteers involved in the earthquake response. Plans for capacity-building on flood preparedness and community engagement will be supported. Interviews with affected households also revealed ongoing livelihood challenges and psychosocial needs.
▪ In the South-East, 27,585 people (6,156 families) have received assistance to date, including 4,900 people (1,149 families) who received multi-purpose assistance. Distribution of core relief items to 522 families began on 11 June, while shelter support for 300 families is currently being prepared.
▪ Together with other humanitarian partners, UNHCR continues to advocate for an end to conflict and for safe, unhindered humanitarian access to deliver life-saving aid to those in need.
