UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator Kyung-wha Kang will be visiting Myanmar from 10 to 14 June 2014.
On 10 June, ASG Kang is scheduled to meet Government officials in Nay Pyi Taw, including the First Vice President, the Minister of Border Affairs, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, and the Minister of Social Welfare, Relief, and Resettlement.
In Rakhine State, from 11 to 12 June, ASG Kang plans to travel to Sittwe and Pauktaw to visit IDP camps and communities affected by inter-communal violence and to evaluate progress in the humanitarian response in Rakhine. From 13 to 14 June, Ms. Kang plans to travel to Myitkyina in Kachin State to visit the Waingmaw IDP Camp and meet local NGOs leading the humanitarian effort in Kachin.
The ASG’s mission coincides with the second anniversary of the inter-communal violence in Rakhine State, which displaced more than 140,000 people, and three years of the conflict in Kachin, which has displaced more than 100,000 people.
The ASG is expected to brief the media upon her return to New York.
