Statement on the 4th Anniversary of the Military coup in Myanmar

Attachments

Today marks the fourth anniversary of the military coup in Myanmar, The Border Consortium (TBC) stands in solidarity with civil society, humanitarian workers, and activists who continue to work tirelessly for a peaceful, just, and inclusive future for the people of Myanmar.

Since the coup in February 2021, the illegitimate military regime has inflicted immense suffering on the people of Myanmar and widespread crimes against humanity. Over 6,100 civilians have been killed and more than 28,000 individuals have been arbitrarily arrested. Indiscriminate aerial attacks have destroyed schools, hospitals, and places of worship, tearing apart communities and depriving civilians of basic safety and dignity.

TBC reaffirms our commitment to supporting displaced communities on both sides of the Thai-Myanmar border. We embody resistance humanitarianism, not only addressing the immediate needs of those displaced but also by challenging the root causes of this crisis, the illegitimate military regime.

For refugees in Thailand, many of whom have spent more than four decades in displacement, we continue to advocate for durable solutions that uphold their rights to security, protection, and development. In Myanmar, together with our partners, we will continue to provide emergency humanitarian aid and focus on the pursuit of human security and long-term stability for these communities.

Today, we call upon the international community to renew its commitment to Myanmar. Funding for Myanmar is at an all-time low, and there exists real risks that due to funding pressures displaced communities may not receive the assistance they need. The needs of Myanmar’s displaced communities cannot be forgotten.

TBC stands united with the people of Myanmar in their struggle for freedom, justice, and peace. Together, we will build a better future for all.
