Situation Update No. 8 - Combined Effects of Tropical Cyclone YAGI and Southwest Monsoon - 27 September 2024

1.SUMMARY

UPDATED IMPACTS.

In Lao PDR, based on the last impact report dated 21 September, indicate that Tropical Cyclone YAGI and the Southwest Monsoon have affected 1,208 villages across 106 districts in 15 provinces, including Vientiane Capital, Borikhamxay, and others. According to the NDMO Lao PDR, the cyclone and monsoon have resulted in seven fatalities and impacted approximately 185.8K people (76.1K families), including 75.4K women. The estimated cost of damages stands at around 7.9 million USD, with significant destruction including 252 road sections, 77 schools, 11 health facilities, 298 houses, and 24.6K hectares of agricultural land. Data collection and validation are currently ongoing by the relevant authorities in Lao PDR.

In Myanmar, based on the last impact report of DDM Myanmar on 21 September, detailing the effects of Tropical Cyclone YAGI and the Southwest Monsoon across Naypyitaw, Kayah, Kayin, Bago, Magway, Mandalay, Shan, and Ayeyarwady, approximately 569.3K individuals have been affected. There were 328 fatalities, 86 people missing, and 48 injuries. The cyclone has caused damage to around 1,472 houses, as well as significant infrastructure losses, including 207 government office buildings, 498 schools, 435 religious structures, 535 road and bridge sections, 2,489 electric poles, and 107 communication towers. Data collection and validation are currently being conducted by relevant authorities in Myanmar.

In the Philippines, as of 27 September, the impact in the Philippines remains consistent with the latest report from 20 September regarding the combined effects of Tropical Cyclone YAGI and the Southwest Monsoon. According to the NDRRMC Philippines, approximately 804.4K families (about 3M individuals) have been affected across Regions 1, 2, 3, CALABARZON, 5, 6, 7, 8, CAR, and NCR. The current casualties include 21 fatalities, 22 injuries, and 26 individuals reported missing. As of this reporting, NDRRMC Philippines are responding to other tropical cyclones and southwest monsoon. Please refer to the official reports from NDRRMC to see the impacts of these disasters.

In Thailand, based on the DDPM report on 24 September, floods, flash floods, and landslides have affected 33 provinces, including Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Tak, and others. The disaster has impacted 179 districts, 788 sub-districts, and approximately 4K villages. According to the DDPM Thailand, around 163K households have been affected, resulting in 46 fatalities—23 from floods and 23 from landslides— and 24 reported injuries.

In Viet Nam, the reported impacts remain consistent with the report on 20 September 2024, which included 333 dead or missing individuals (299 dead, 34 missing) across provinces such as Lao Cai, Cao Bang, and Hanoi, and 1.9K reported injuries. Approximately 234.98K houses have been damaged, alongside 200.2K hectares of rice, 50.6K hectares of other crops, and 38.1K hectares of fruit trees. Additionally, 3,269 aquaculture cages were destroyed, and losses include 22,514 livestock and over 3 million poultry, amounting to an estimated total damage of 2.5 billion USD. The Viet Nam Disaster Management Authority (VDDMA) is also addressing the impacts of Tropical Cyclone SOULIK, which made landfall on 19 September.
