Affected Areas
As of 5 August, the Relief and Resettlement Department (RRD) reports 23,884 people displaced by monsoon floods in Kayin, Mon, Tanintharyi and Rakhine States and the Ayeyawady Region, a decrease of 14,432 individuals from 2 August report (38,316 people reportedly affected on that date). Authorities continue to monitor tropical storms in the region for threats, today Tropic Storm Jebi was downgraded to tropical depression.
Kayin State decreased the number of affected people the most, from 33,409 relocated individuals in 79 camps to 18,842 in 52 locations. Relocation camps in Phayar Thonesu, Kyiek Don, Min Lat Pan and In Gyin Myaing were closed during the past days. Access to Myawadi has been restablished on 2 August for light trucks. Generally, water levels in the State are receding.
In Mon State, the figured dropped to 1,857 people relocated in three camps. All people affected in Yae and Belin areas have returned home.
In Tanintharyi, only Tanintharyi township has one camp hosting 2,067 people.
In Rakhine State, only 39 people continue to be relocated with relatives in Minbya. People from Myauk Oo returned home.
In the Ayeyawady region, Tharbaung and Maubin townships continue to report 1,079 people displaced in safer places (no camps settled).
Coordination and response
Government forecast that most people in relocation sites in Kayin will return within the next 24 to 48 hours. However, there will many farm fields will require rehabilitation due to flood damage and food security will be monitored in these areas over the coming months. Repairs in infrastructure and damaged houses will be also needed.
Food: The WFP rapid food needs assessment team is in the field since the weekend to evaluate, jointly with the Government, current emergency food requirements and medium to longer term needs for affected people. This includes those who have lost their crops and livelihoods. World Vision, Malteser, Action Aid, ADRA and SDC have been supporting the emergency phase.
Non Food Items (NFI): UNHCR has supported Kayin State authorities to coordinate and to identify needs and gaps of NFIs. Besides the Government, MRCS, Save the Children, World Vision, UNHCR and NRC have been delivering kits and/or have capacity to support Government to reach all people still in need once they will be back in their homes.
