Myanmar: Health cluster situation report no. 32, 07 Jul 2008

HIGHLIGHTS

The Village Tract Assessment (VTA) findings indicate that the incidence of common diseases like diarrhoea, fever, cold and skin rashes varies depending on the geographical area. Bogale and Labutta townships have the highest proportion of diarrhoea, fever, cold and skin rashes.

According to the Tripartite Core Group (TCG), swift action taken by the Ministry of Health of Myanmar with the support of the United Nations, ASEAN, the Red Cross, and international/national NGOs has prevented the mass outbreak of disease that was feared after the cyclone.

Dengue prevention and control activities are being intensified.

HEALTH ASSESSMENT AND SITUATION UPDATE

The Village Tract Assessment (VTA) findings indicate that the incidence of common diseases like diarrhoea, fever, cold and skin rashes varies depending on the geographical area. Bogale and Labutta townships have the highest proportion of diarrhoea, fever, cold and skin rashes.

Twice as many women as men between the ages of 18-60 years have died in the cyclone according to OCHA.

According to the Tripartite Core Group (TCG), swift action taken by the Ministry of Health of Myanmar with the support of the United Nations, ASEAN, the Red Cross, and international/national NGOs has prevented the mass outbreak of disease that was feared after the cyclone.

HEALTH CLUSTER RESPONSE

1. Disease Surveillance

One national epidemiologist has been recruited to support the Health Cluster's Early Warning Alert and Response System (EWARS).

Two other national officers have been recruited to provide support in Pyapon and MwaliMyagon township.

2 Health Action

WHO is supporting IOM's referral initiative, which aims to provide transportation facilities for sick mothers, children and other severely sick people.

Dengue prevention and control activities are being intensified. WHO is supporting the Ministry of Health in these activities.

HEALTH COORDINATION

WHO is supporting field-level health coordination by other agencies in different townships. UNICEF, Merlin and Save the Children will be involved in health coordination in different townships.

WASH Cluster

WASH has put August 15, 2008 as the deadline for completing all pond cleaning activities.

Nutrition cluster

Nutrition cluster is analysing data available from a separate in depth assessment done in the delta area. This analysis will help identify gaps in the nutrition sector.

The revised appeal will be launched on 10 July in New York.
