Myanmar and Thailand - Earthquakes, update (AHA Centre, DG ECHO, Copernicus EMSR) (ECHO Daily Flash of 16 April 2025)

  • The death toll continues to rise in Myanmar and Thailand following the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck near Mandalay City on 28 March. Over the past seven days, at least four additional earthquakes, ranging from magnitude 4.7 to 5.5 (occurred on 13 April), have been recorded between Shwebo and the capital, Naypyidaw.
  • In Myanmar, the AHA Centre reports that, as of 14 April, there have been 3 655 fatalities, 129 people remain missing, and 4 824 have been injured. Nearly 200 000 individuals are currently displaced, with 41 733 sheltering in 145 temporary facilities.
  • In Thailand, 44 people have died, and 37 others have been injured as a result of the earthquake.
  • OCHA Myanmar, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the UNEP/OCHA Joint Environment Unit (JEU) have requested assistance from the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM). Six EU Member States have offered food, shelter and medical items.
  • On 28 March, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) was activated (EMSR798) to provide emergency damage assessment. So far, more than 90 maps have been produced.
