Myanmar - 3.4 million more people in acute food insecurity (DG ECHO partners) (ECHO Daily Flash of 19 June 2025)

  • New data shows that there are now estimated to be 16.7 million people facing high levels of acute food insecurity in Myanmar. This is 29% of the country’s population and an increase of 3.4 million people compared to 2024. The populations with the highest share of people in Crisis or worse (equivalent to IPC Phase 3 or above) are Rakhine, Kayah and Chin states.
  • The biggest driver of the large surge in food insecurity is the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on 28 March. The earthquake will have a long-lasting impact on food security, having disrupted livelihoods and basic services. Escalating conflict across the country and cuts to the overall humanitarian budget have also contributed to the increase in food insecurity.
  • DG ECHO partners are responding to the emergency situation across the country, providing food and nutrition as well as cash for food.
