Media Statement – Kachin

Yangon 15 December 2011 - Instability in Kachin State started in June 2011 and resulted in the displacement of people, loss of lives and livelihoods, and damage to infrastructure.

The Kachin State Government, Myanmar Red Cross Society, national NGOs, community-based organizations, churches and monasteries, as well as other parties, with the support of UN agencies and international NGOs, have been providing some assistance to the IDPs , since June, with the resources they had available.

The UN and partners have been repeatedly expressed their readiness to support all those affected by the conflict, and the most vulnerable in particular. Discussion with parties progressively resulted in enhanced outreach to carry out assessment and aid delivery. This includes an UN inter-agency mission to Laiza - on the Myanmar-China border - from 12 – 14 December. In Laiza, the team delivered essential household items to the displaced people and carried out an initial assessment of the situation. The United Nations and its humanitarian partners look forward to being able to continue to provide humanitarian assistance to all those in need.
