This briefing by Insecurity Insight analyses social media activity from 27 March to 30 April 2025, assessing observed narratives in Myanmar related to the humanitarian response to the March 28 earthquake.
SUMMARY: Between 28 March and 30 April, Myanmar’s social media landscape saw over 14K posts about the earthquake, reflecting a very active online environment. This report analyses 16 of the most engaged posts explicitly referencing the aid sector reaching 19.6 million users and generated 2,370 comments. While many responses welcomed international assistance, others reflected deep mistrust—targeting the military’s role in aid delivery, questioning where help is directed, and raising concerns about diversion or resale of relief. Reactions to a military-announced ceasefire and the blocked Taiwanese rescue mission further revealed how political dynamics are shaping public perception of humanitarian efforts.
