Context: A growing crisis

In 2001 HIV prevalence in Burma/Myanmar was estimated to be 2%, with highest transmission rates among intravenous drug users (30%) and sex workers (68%), while a steadily increasing number of pregnant women were testing positive. Populations in urban and border areas were identified as most at risk.
