A cheque presentation ceremony for the victims of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar and victims of the earthquake in the People's Republic of China will be held on Thursday, 6 November 2008, at 2.30 pm at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Putrajaya.
The Honourable Dato' Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, will be receiving three cheques, respectively from Majlis Datuk-Datuk Negeri Melaka, Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (LHDN) and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Aminuddin Baki. Contributions received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, (amounting to RM42,000) will be channelled through the Tabung Bencana Kementerian Luar Negeri to the victims of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, as well as the victims of earthquake in the People's Republic of China.
Majlis Datuk-Datuk Negeri Melaka's contribution of RM30,000 is accrued from the Sichuan Earthquake Disaster Fund which the council had established in relation to the earthquake that hit the People's Republic of China in May 2008. The cheque will be represented by Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Datuk Wira Ahmad Nordin Bin Md. Amin, President of the Majlis Datuk-Datuk Negeri Melaka, to the Foreign Minister. Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri will be contributing RM5,840.27 for the victims of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar and RM5,840.28 will be contributed to victims of the earthquake in the People's Republic of China.
The cheque will be presented by En. Che Omar bin A. Rahaman, Deputy Director-General (Compliance), to the Foreign Minister. In addition, the students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Aminuddin Baki will also make a contribution of RM1,000 for the victims of the earthquake in the People's Republic of China. The cheque will be handed over by Pn. Latifah binti Mahfod, Principal of the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Aminuddin Baki.
The Government of Malaysia had earlier contributed RM5.1 million in monetary and also, relief items such as medical supplies and tents to the victims of Cyclone Nargis. A medical team consisted of 25 personnel, fully equipped with medical supplies and appliances were also deployed on a humanitarian mission to Myanmar. The Government of Malaysia had also contributed relief items worth USD1.5 million to the victims of the earthquake in the People's Republic of China.
