Burmese military continues clashes with KNU

Kanyamaw

Burmese military troops from Light Infantry Battalion 66 have continued to fire on Karen National Union brigade two troops in fighting that started in Thandaung township, northern Karen State last Thursday.

Three Burmese military brigades from LIB 66 have been operating in the township since the end of last month.

KNU general secretary Padon Mahn Shar said there had been four or five clashes between the State Peace and Development Council troops and KNU's second brigade since Burmese troops moved into the area.

While reports have emerged of casualties on both sides it is unclear how many have been injured.

As a result of the fighting, hundreds of villagers from Thanduang township have fled to the Thai-Burma border while others have hidden in the surrounding jungles to protect themselves from mortar fire.

The Burmese military troops are also reported to have cut off food supplies, burned villages and planted mines in Toungoo district.

"We don't know how to continue on talking about ceasefire with the government since they keep attacking us like this," Padoh Mahn Shar said.

The KNU has a ceasefire agreement with the Burmese military which has also launched major offensives against the KNU's first and second brigades.
