Overview
Mozambique is facing the worst floods in decades, affecting almost 700,000 people across central and southern provinces. While assessments are ongoing, the government estimates that over one million people can be impacted. Major rivers including Limpopo, Buzi and Licungo have overflowed, destroying homes, isolating communities and disrupting rescue operations. On 16 January, the Government declared national Red Alert and evacuations were ordered in high‑risk areas of Chókwè and Guijá, Gaza Province. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management (INGD) has activated 80 accommodation centres to shelter displaced families.
Although the rainy season has only just begun, conditions are already severe and could deteriorate further. As humanitarian needs continue to rise sharply, WFP is supporting government‑led efforts and mobilizing lifesaving food assistance, in coordination with OCHA and humanitarian partners.
