Abstract:
As of December 27, 2024, OCHA reports that Cyclone Chido has severely impacted Mozambique, particularly the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, and Niassa. The cyclone has affected over 453,971 people, with at least 77,000 individuals receiving assistance within 12 days of its impact. Humanitarian efforts have been mobilized, including the deployment of field teams to provide urgent aid, while multi- sectoral assessments are ongoing in the hardest-hit areas.
The security situation in Mozambique, particularly in Cabo Delgado and Nampula, remains precarious, exacerbated by the ongoing political unrest following the contested elections in October 2024. In Nampula, rural areas and villages have experienced significant turmoil, with clashes between protesters and security forces further destabilizing the region. The political environment has created limitations on movement for humanitarian staff, including those from ChildFund International and WeWorld, hindering the delivery of critical aid to cyclone-affected populations. However, both organizations under the ChildFund Alliance were able to finalize the multi-sectoral assessments and planning to launch response in some of the hardest-hit areas.
