Maputo(AIM) - Mozambique and the United States, through its International Development Agency (USAID), have signed an agreement under which USAID is to make available 55 million US dollars earmarked for the thorough rehabilitation of 225 kilometres of the Limpopo rail line that runs from Maputo to Zimbabwe, which was badly damaged at the height of the February floods.
Signing the agreement were Mozambican Transport Minister Tomaz Salomao and the USAID Maputo director, Cynthia Rozell.
Salomao told journalists that the signing of the agreement meant that the rehabilitation process of the Limpopo line is "irreversible".
He added that the line "is a fundamental
factor for the country to have access to the world market, and face the
challenges of globalisation".
