OBJECTIVE

The objective of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) program in Mozambique is to promote private-sector led growth and help poor rural Mozambicans increase their incomes, participate more fully in democratic governance and processes, and lead healthier lives.

PROGRAM AREAS

Increase Rural Incomes: USAID is helping nine million rural inhabitants of central Mozambique to increase their food security and incomes by improving access to financial and business services, technology, and markets through market information and major road rehabilitation. Households are now using improved seed varieties and soil-fertility management techniques such as contour planting. As a result in areas with USAID field-based activities per capita income has increased by more than 10 percent each year since 1996.

Support Democracy and Governance: USAID supports the consolidation of democracy in Mozambique by supporting capacity building of the national legislature, civil society development, development of more effective judicial processes, and activities to strengthen newly elected municipal governments. In December 1999 Mozambique held its second successful multi-party national elections, an extremely significant milestone.

Improve Comprehensive Health Services: In the health sector, USAID emphasizes improving both the quality and quantity of clinic-based health services by increasing the local capacity of both public and non-governmental institutions to provide sustainable access to basic health services, especially those related to HIV/AIDS awareness, child survival, malaria, and polio. The HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in Mozambique is approximately 16 percent, though it varies widely by region.

Increase Private-Sector-Led Growth: USAID continues to support private sector-led growth and development, improving the ability of business associations to work with the government and the legislature to develop trade- and investment-friendly regulations including tax, tariff, and trade reform.
