USAID Donates Equipment to Flood Relief Efforts in Mozambique as Miami-Dade Team Completes Mission

WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) today announced that it will donate search and rescue equipment to two humanitarian relief organizations assisting flood victims in Mozambique.

USAID, through its Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), will consign three 17-foot rigid-hull inflatable boats, three trailers, and three trucks to Food for the Hungry International (FHI) to assist in the organization's continuing relief operations in Mozambique. The boats were used for relief and rescue operations and also played a key role in distributing humanitarian relief supplies to isolated pockets of flood-affected populations along the Buzi River, in central Mozambique. U.S. Ambassador Brian Dean Curran turned over the equipment, valued at approximately $200,000, on March 16.

Also, a 30x17-foot tent and two water-cooled generators will be given to Medecins du Monde (MDM). These facilities will be used as an interim hospital in Beira, to replace one that was damaged by the cyclone earlier this month.

The USAID mission in Maputo is providing these items to FHI and MDM to enhance their capacity to address the long-term reconstruction and rehabilitation needs in the affected areas.

A Miami-Dade Search and Rescue team deployed by USAID/OFDA has completed its mission in Mozambique and will return to the U.S. on March 19. Prior to the team's departure from Mozambique, Ambassador Curran and USAID Mission Director Cynthia Rozell officially thanked the team members in Beira on behalf of the U.S. government for their support of flood response efforts.

USAID has provided approximately $13.6 million in humanitarian aid to assist flood relief efforts in Mozambique.

USAID is the U.S. government agency responsible for implementing humanitarian and development programs around the world.
