Tropical Cyclone Chido: Health Cluster Northern Mozambique Situation Report No.1 - 18 December 2024 (Reporting period: 15-18 December 2024)

1. BACKGROUND

  • Intense Tropic Cyclone CHIDO made landfall in Mecufi district (Cabo Delgado Province) on Sunday 15 December at 6.20 am.

  • CHIDO brought heavy rains (up to 250mm/24h) and strong winds (up to 180km/h).

  • As of 16 December, CHIDO has moved to Malawi, and it is expected to dissipate in Zimbabwe on 17 December.

  • Cabo Delgado, Nampula, and Niassa have been the most impacted provinces, with heavy rains and strong winds. To a lesser extent also Tete and Northen Manica

2. SITUATION UPDATE BY PROVINCE

Cabo Delgado Province

The districts of Mecufi, Chiure and Pemba were heavily impacted, followed by Namuno, Montepuez, Metuge, Macomia and Muidumbe.

Preliminary figures indicate indicate that approximately 23,598 homes have been completely destroyed, 149 schools affected, 598 classrooms destroyed, and 37 health facilities impacted.
There are also significant challenges with electricity, water supply and internet connectivity.

Pemba airport was closed and has been reopened.

Mecufi district:

Infrastructure Damage: Approximately 100 % of houses have been damaged, with very few remaining standing; 400 families were left homeless

Human Impact: 50 people have been injured, and 16 deaths have been confirmed.

Patient Transferer: 35 patients have been referred to Pemba for treatment.

Healthcare Conditions: Medical professionals are operating from a school under extremely poor conditions.

Medical Supplies: Ambulances are operational ( roads remain critical) ; medication are exposed to the elements, resulting in a total loss of stock.

Accommodation Centers: There no any temporaries active ACs.

Health Risks: There is a risk of using spoiled supplies as they continue to receive injured individuals.

Chiure district:

Infrastructure Damage: 50% of houses have lost their roof, and an additional 50% have been totally destroyed.

Human Impact: 31 people have been injured, and 2 deaths have been confirmed.

Water Supply Cris is: There is no access to water in Megaruma, creating an urgent need for water trucking to support 3,000 families.

Healthcare Conditions: Health services are 30% available at the Chiúre Rural Hospital. The Samora Machel Health Center, which has been destroyed, was also assessed.

Accommodation Centers: There are currently 4 active ACs, but at the moment there are no displaced individuals.

Over 1,000 individuals are being hosted at Kuphe School, but there is no registration or support available for them.

Metuge district:

Area can be accessed only 4 x4 vehicles

Areas assessed: Metuge sede (50% destruction of shelters), Nalia (100% destruction) and Mieze (100% destruction) “No houses, all on the floor”

Most shelter covered by metal sheet roofing have been damaged.

Medication warehouse and maternity severely affected.

Pemba district:

Three accommodation centers were identified, and despite efforts from I OM and UNHCR to operationalize, the population was only hosted at the Industrial Institute.

The population impacted and displaced is from Paquitequete. Already vulnerable neighborhood, with presence of IDPs.

Early assessment of the shelters in their areas indicated most of the issues are linked to the metal sheets, used for roofing and also walls.

Pemba City is at risk of urban floods, specifically the following areas: Bairro Cariaco, Alto Chuiba, Eduardo Mondlane, Natite, Ingonane and Paquetequete
