As part of its response to the floods in
Mozambique, The Salvation Army is working with one particular community
which has not received aid from any other source.
Just a few kilometres from the centre
of Maputo, 540 people are now housed in a derelict factory. In this area,
more than 130 families lost absolutely everything when a torrent of water
swept away brick and concrete houses, roads, gardens and sandy soil to
a depth of a metre. There is not even rubble to indicate where the houses
were.
Many of these people do not even have sleeping mats. The Salvation Army is assisting with food and other supplies.
As other areas north of Maputo become accessible, there will be other communities where The Salvation Army will need to provide immediate food relief and longer term assistance during the recovery phase.
