Mozambique has been affected by flooding due to excessive rains in country and neighbouring South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Swaziland. The Mozambique Disaster Management Coordination Council (INGC) issued a red alert for the areas affected on 22 January 2013 and the forecasted floods.
In its statement issued on the 31 st of January 2013 UN OCHA estimates 55 people to have died as result of the floods. Approximately 250,000 people are affected of which 169,000 people have been temporarily displaced. The reported damage to infrastructure includes roads, bridges, schools, homes and agricultural land.
ACT members have been working around the clock since the disaster was declared and are appealing for more funds:
To provide flood affected households with access to safe drinking water and improved hygiene and sanitation conditions through the treatment of water and provision of sanitation materials.
To provide shelter and NFI materials to flood affected households allowing them basic protection for the weather as well as enabling them to maintain their privacy and dignity.
To provide households affected by the flooding with appropriate early recovery opportunities (e.g. shelter materials, seeds and tools, cash-based interventions) to enable them to rebuild their homes and livelihoods.
