Mozambique - Tropical storm JUDE (Aristotle Emergency Reporting, Reliefweb) (ECHO Daily Flash of 09 March 2025)

  • On 9 March, Tropical storm JUDE is strengthening in the Mozambique channel. It is currently a Moderate Tropical Storm (equivalent to a Tropical storm in the Saffir-Simpson scale) with max sustained winds near 85 kph and estimated gusts of 120 kph, but could intensify into a Tropical Cyclone (equivalent to a Cat 1 hurricane) before making landfall in the Nampula province of Mozambique by 10 March in the morning.
  • TS JUDE is likely to bring very strong to destructive winds close to the impact zone. The main threat is expected from heavy and prolonged rain in Mozambique (mainly provinces of Nampula, Nissa, Zambezia and Sofala) and southern Malawi, with huge areas seeing tremendous amounts of rain.
  • Flooding impacts are forecasted mainly in the Zambezia and Nampula regions of Mozambique, where maximum flows of around 20 year return period or above are expected in the coming days.
  • Total estimated population in the area is 26,353,000.
  • Nampula province was impacted by Tropical Cyclone CHIDO (December 2024) and DIKELEIDI (January 2025) affecting 455,000 people.
