Mozambique - Severe weather and floods, update (INGD, INAM, NOAA Southern Africa) (ECHO Daily Flash of 31 March 2026)

  • Heavy rainfall has continued to affect most of Mozambique (particularly the central and northern provinces) since 1 March, causing widespread floods and river overflow that have resulted in an increasing humanitarian impact. The worst affected provinces are currently Sofala, Tete and Nampula.
  • The National Disasters Management Institute (INGD) reports, as of 31 March, 47 fatalities, eight people still missing, 20 injured people, nearly 26 000 evacuated people in 48 accommodation centres and a total of more than 175 500 affected people across the country. In addition, INGD also reports 5 815 destroyed houses, 32 446 damaged houses and seven damaged bridges.
  • Over the next 96 hours, more rainfall with locally heavy rainfall is still forecast over central and northern Mozambique.
