SITUATION UPDATE

At least two million people in northern Mozambique need life-saving and life-sustaining humanitarian assistance and protection in 2023 in Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Niassa as a result of the continued impact of armed conflict, violence and insecurity in the region. In 2023, the Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) in northern Mozambique seeks U$513 million to target 1.6 million people.

A total of 43 humanitarian organizations coordinate through the HRP framework to assist people in need. Between January and May, approximately 1.2 million people were reached with some form of humanitarian assistance.

The Food Security and Livelihoods Cluster (FSL) reports the highest level of achievements (100 per cent of target). However, since April 2022 half rations have been distributed with the exception of December 2022 and January 2023, that allowed to cover a larger caseload but with a much smaller ration.

Food assistance was increased in the northern district of Quissanga, Muidumbe, Nangade, Macomia, Mocimboa da Praia and Palma to meet the needs of returnee population.

At the end of May 2023, the HRP is 24 per cent funded having received $121 million. Funding imbalances among clusters persist; at mid-year the Health Cluster has secured 44 per cent of its requirements while funding level for remaining clusters range from six per cent (Education) to 35 per cent (Shelter and NFIs). In May, information is available for the response of humanitarian organizations that are not part of the HRP.
