Mozambique continues to face significant impacts from sustained heavy rainfall and flooding across southern and central regions as of 21 January 2026. Precipitation levels remain high in the Maputo, Incomáti, Limpopo, Save, Búzi, Púngoè and Zambeze basins, where hydrometric stations are at or near alert thresholds, and continued rainfall is expected to exacerbate runoff and flooding risks. An estimated 600,000 people have been affected by flooding, with Gaza, Maputo and Sofala provinces recording the highest impacts.
As of 21 January 2026, 73,635 people (17,229 households) are displaced in 71 accommodation centres (ACs) nationwide. This represents a small proportion (12%) of the total affected population, with aproximately 600,000 people impacted, a significant share of households are displaced outside formal ACs, typically staying with relatives, in community structures or in spontaneous sites that are not systematically monitored.
