The latest IPC-Acute Food Insecurity Analysis published on 28 November 2023, shows that between May to September 2023 an estimated 2.6 million people in Mozambique have been classified as IPC3+. During the projected period October 2023 to March 2024, food insecurity is expected to worsen with an estimated population of 3.3 million in IPC3+. Two Cabo Delgado districts (Moçimboa da Praia and Meluco) are expected to be in IPC4.
It is estimated that about 210,000 children aged between 6-69 months will be affected by Acute Malnutrition in the next 12 months. In Palma district (Cabo Delgado) the situation is rated -- and projected- as Critical (Phase 4) due to the increasing movement of returnees, lack of humanitarian assistance and ineffectiveness of social and health services.
Current and projected vulnerabilities of Mozambique are driven by occurrence of extreme weather events - including cyclones, floods and El Niño- conflict in Cabo Delgado, inflation and prices rise and lack of employment opportunities.
