The latest IPC Acute Food Insecurity Analysis published in July 2024 shows that between April and September 2024, an estimated 2.8 million people in Mozambique are classified as IPC3+ and during the projected period October 2024 to March 2025, food insecurity is expected to worsen with an estimated population of 3.3 million in IPC3+. The number of people reported in IPC 4 (Emergency) has significantly increased to 510,000 (18% of total IPC3+) for the period under review, and 777,000 (24% of total IPC3+) for the projected period. Of the seven districts projected on IPC4, three are located in Cabo Delgado.
It is estimated that about 144,270 children aged under 5 (equalling 11% of the total children population in the surveyed districts) and 23,158 pregnant and lactating women are affected by acute malnutrition.
The main drivers of food insecurity in Mozambique are the impact on agri-production of El Niño-induced drought, Tropical Storm Filipo and other climate-related shocks, as well as the conflict in Northern Mozambique.
